Doha Layover & Stopover Guide

Connecting through Hamad International Airport (HIA)? With fast metro connections and visa-free entry for over 100 nationalities, turning your layover into a mini-vacation is easy. Here is how to maximize a 4, 8, 12, or 24-hour stopover in Doha.

How much layover time do you have?

Under 4 Hours: Stay Airside

If your stopover is under 4 hours, stay inside Hamad International Airport (HIA). Enjoy the tropical indoor garden Orchard, duty-free shopping, executive lounges, or airport hotel spa without immigration clearance.

5 to 8 Hours: Express Souq & Corniche

Clear immigration, board the Red Line Metro directly at the airport terminal, and head to Msheireb or Souq Waqif. Walk the heritage alleyways, sample traditional Qatari dining, and stroll along the Corniche. There's no legal dress code, but Visit Qatar's own guidance asks men and women to keep shoulders and knees covered in public places (source: Visit Qatar guidance, accessed 2026-09-15), worth planning for straight off a long-haul flight.

9 to 14 Hours: Museums & West Bay Skyline

Visit the iconic Museum of Islamic Art or National Museum of Qatar in the morning, take a dhow cruise from the Corniche, enjoy lunch at Msheireb, and capture the West Bay skyline at sunset.

24 Hours / Overnight Stopover

Book a hotel in West Bay or near Souq Waqif. Add an evening desert safari or a visit to Katara Cultural Village and The Pearl-Qatar before heading back to the airport.

Getting from HIA Airport to Doha City Center

Hamad International Airport is located right next to the city bay, making transfers exceptionally fast compared to most world hubs.

Doha Metro (Red Line)

The Metro station is connected directly to Terminal 1. Take the Red Line towards Lusail. Change at Msheireb for the Gold Line to Souq Waqif. Cost: 2 QAR ($0.55 USD) per single journey card.

Karwa Taxis & Uber

Official turquoise Karwa taxis wait outside Arrivals. Metred fares to Souq Waqif or West Bay typically range between 35 QAR and 65 QAR ($10 - $18 USD). Uber is also widely available.

Luggage Storage & Transit Visas

Luggage storage isn't offered at the terminal itself; use the Tawfeeq Travel Hub at Hamad International Airport Metro Station (shop U05, Red Line), a five-minute walk from the terminal, for paid short-term storage (source: Tawfeeq Travel; Gulf Times, accessed 2026-09-15). 102 countries qualify for visa-free entry; travellers on Qatar Airways connecting flights can also get a free transit visa for layovers of 5 to 96 hours (source: Qatar visa-policy sources, cross-checked, accessed 2026-09-15).
